Background:
"Before moving to Los Angeles, I worked at an advertising agency in Boston as a graphic designer
specializing in logo design. After a couple of years I started getting the itch to create my own designs,
control my artistic destiny, and do work that was 3 dimensional and permanent. In 1989 I moved to L.A.
and investigated having my first design, (the Pyramid Table) fabricated, but it was very expensive, so I
bought a welder and taught myself how to use it. This gave me the freedom to totally control the design
of my work. I can be spontaneous, or modify works during construction. I no longer have any artistic
limitations. I have let my imagination take over."

Style:
"I create sculptures and functional art in welded steel, stainless steel, brass, copper, and aluminum.
The works vary considerably and include swirl grinded bare metal intersecting geometric shapes
sculptures, rusty found object assemblages, colorfully painted wall sculptures, mobiles, suspended
magnetic sculptures, and powder coated bright colored sculptural tables and chairs. My work is usually
fun, colorful, visually stimulating, and often conveys my sense of humor. My found object works may be
people, animals, insects, or dinosaurs, and are stylized, simplified, and given their own unique
personalities."

"I consider myself to be a visual scientist, relentlessly exploring as many forms of artistic expression as I can.
Sculpture is not my career, its my life. I am obsessed with creating as many new sculptures as possible.
"

Artist Statement:
"I love being an artist, and I am very thankful that I have been able to continue my career of selling my sculptural creations for over 21 years now. I enjoy being able to envision concepts in my mind, and then creating them out of nowhere. My sculptures are not made because I want to sell them. They are made because I want to see these ideas exist before me. My creations are truly a part of me, and I think of them like they are my children. In fact, if I didn't need to selI them, I would probably keep most sculptures for myself. I love to experiment creatively, and am hoping to eventually try my skills at writing a novel, making a movie, writing songs, and more. The thought process has already begun in these areas, and many of my ideas percolate in my mind for years until something just clicks, and then I dive right into the project. I predict that I will be very unpredictable as to the directions I will travel in the future. I think artists should really try to work in as many creative areas as they possibly can, at least to some extent. Having an experimental and open mind is key. An artist should be able to appreciate and be inspired by the shape, color, and texture of ordinary things that others would overlook or dismiss as uninteresting."

Note to art students seeking an interview:

I am more than happy to try to help art students who want to interview me, or ask a question on techniques. I am doing 5-10 or more of these interviews a week now, so please don't ask me questions I have already answered on the Q&A page. My time is valuable and very limited. Studio visits can be arranged by appointment only. Due to the volume of requests for interviews, I have now listed the answers to the most common questions: Click here for Interview Q & A page.

Note to potential interns:
Metal sculpting is very hard work, especially all the grinding, which is what you do the most of. I have had lots of art students beg me to be interns, and I have tried a few...............but everyone complains how hard it is (within the first 10 minutes usually), and nobody has survived more than one day. Its been a waste of my time, so I'm not doing it anymore. If you want to be a full time metal sculptor, you better get used to the idea of very hard work, and if you are afraid of getting a few cuts and burns here and there, you may as well forget it.
