Questions for Monster House - Future Retro House builder Bruce Gray
What was it like being a builder for Monster House?
It was quite an interesting experience. We worked very late every day, from 7am to as late as 4:30 am. It was certainly more difficult and required longer days than I expected. I normally work alone as a sculptor, so it was very different for me to work as part of a team, because I did not get to decide how things would look or how they get constructed. There was also the somewhat surrealistic environment of being filmed and asked questions every few minutes all day long. A lot of the tools I have in my studio were not available, so I didn't have the usual level of flexibility or experience with tools that I am used to. I had fun being on the show, and I'm glad I did it.
How did you get to appear on Monster House?
They contacted me after finding my sculpture website at www.brucegray.com and asked me if I would be interested in appearing on the show. We started filming just a few days later.
Why did you want to be a builder on Monster House?
Because I wanted to promote my sculpture business on national television.
What did you think of the Future Retro House?
I liked most of it. I would have liked to have created a large futuristic sculpture for the living room. I think the spaceship concept has been done enough already, so I would have left that out. I also would not have put a TV right over a fireplace. Overall, I thought the Future Retro House looked very cool when it was completed. I would have constructed a few things differently, if I was allowed to. I would have liked to have been on the design team, as well as the build team.
What did you think of your build team?
Everyone on the team worked very hard all day long. Not a slacker in the bunch. I enjoyed meeting and working with them.
